Este livro é uma investigação antropológica sobre a relação dos Xikrin com os bens industrializados e mercadorias, que procura assumir um ponto de vista no qual a perspectiva dos índios ocupa a posição de figura e não de fundo. Ele tem a pretensão de mostrar que o desejo dos Xikrin pelos objetos que lhes são estrangeiros não é espúrio, inautêntico e exótico; ao contrário, é a expressão de um propósito e de uma história absolutamente (e, portanto, relativamente) indígenas. Seu objetivo é fazer uma descrição etnográfica dos |estranhos pedidos|, ou seja, daquilo que vim a designar pela expressão 'consumismo xikrin' (sua grande demanda por dinheiro e bens), partindo do pressuposto de que tais pedidos não devem ser estranhos da perspectiva xikrin. O que é esse ponto de vista, que efeitos realiza na relação dos Xikrin entre si e com o nosso mundo - são as questões que propõe responder.
